The free German state of Brandenberg surrounds the German capital of Berlin. The state capital of Potsdam was the main Prussian royal residence. The Sanssouci Castle with the Weinberg Terraces, built by Fredrick II between 1745 and 1747, is one of this states greatest architectural treasures. Two other castles worth visiting when in Brandenberg are the Rheinsberg Castle near Neuruppin and the Ruckansicht Castle in Uebigau.
Nature conservation is a major concern in Brandenberg as can be seen by its abundant nature parks and reserves. Favorites among tourists are the nature reserves of the Uckermark, the Elbtalaue, the Shorfheide and the Spree forest.
